Specialist Tutors: Strings and Percussion
Our specialist instrumental tutors work with TVYO students during the sectional rehearsals. These regular sectional rehearsals are one of the reasons why TVYO provides such an excellent musical training for its members. The sectional rehearsals give our players the opportunity to practise tricky sections of the music in small groups - with close support and advice from a teacher who has specialist knowledge of their instrument - before consolidating what they have learnt in the 'full' orchestra rehearsals.
Phillip (P.J.) Augar - Violins.
P.J. was born in Oxford, and was a past member and leader of TVYO! He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music, receiving his training from Lionel Bentley and Manoug Parikian. For twenty years after graduating P.J. enjoyed a varied career as an orchestral and session musician, playing with all the BBC Orchestras, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and others. He feels particularly privileged to have worked alongside artists as diverse as Mstislav Rostropovich, Luciano Pavarotti, Paul McCartney and Dionne Warwick. In 2001 he moved back to Oxfordshire, and has been working with the Oxfordshire Music Service since 2002.
Marion Crombie - Violas.
Marion Crombie received her training on the viola at the Robert Schumann Konservatorium in Dusseldorf, and at the Royal College of Music in London. She has been teaching since 1972, combining this with playing in various orchestras and chamber ensembles and raising three children. She moved to California in 1993 and continued to play and teach, returning to Oxford in 2008. She is also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique.
Valerie Findlay: MA, LRAM - Cellos.
Elizabeth Harré - Double Bass.
Elizabeth studied at the Royal Academy of Music where she was taught by Rodney Slatford and Duncan McTier. She is a successful freelance teacher and player, having performed in Europe, the USA and Australia. Elizabeth currently teaches at number of schools in Oxfordshire, and is one of the tutors at the Oxford Cello School, which is held at Radley College during the summer holidays.
Christopher Fletcher-Campbell - Percussion.
Christopher Fletcher-Campbell's musical interests were fostered by his self-effacing but brilliant music teacher at school, who managed to coax him through A-level music and three keyboard diplomas in his spare time. While reading classical 'Greats' at Oxford, he enjoyed the privilege of singing in Magdalen College Choir under the legendary Dr Bernard Rose, and did much orchestral playing, mainly on violin/viola. His teaching career eventually led him to become Director of Music at Bloxham School for ten years. Chris is now on the staff of Abingdon School, Director of Music at St Helen's Church, Abingdon, conductor of the Oxford Studio Orchestra, the Wantage Orchestra and the Wheatsheaf Consort (Banbury), and chair of the Abingdon Music Festival, and plays percussion with a number of orchestras in Oxford, Swindon and Bristol. He enjoys working with the enthusiastic percussionists of TVYO.
